Personal Support

PSW Services

Personal support is the most hands-on form of care we provide. Our Personal Support Workers (PSWs) assist clients with the personal care tasks that become difficult with age, illness, or reduced mobility โ€” while always protecting choice, privacy, and dignity.

Good personal care doesn't just help someone get dressed. It helps them start the day feeling like themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

We prioritize consistency. We match you with a primary caregiver and work hard to maintain that relationship. Occasional coverage changes can happen โ€” but we always introduce you in advance and your care plan is fully documented so nothing is lost between visits.
All Visible Hands PSWs hold a Personal Support Worker certificate from an accredited Ontario program. They are background-checked, reference-verified, and oriented to our person-centred care standards before they enter a client's home.
Client autonomy is central to how we work. If a client declines a task or the visit itself, we respect that and communicate with families so everyone stays informed. Our approach is never to force compliance, but to build the trust that makes care feel comfortable over time.
Yes โ€” and that is often the most effective arrangement. Many clients receive personal support alongside homemaking, companionship, or housekeeping. We can package services to fit your schedule and budget.

Homemaking & Meal Preparation

A clean, organized, and well-nourished home is not a luxury โ€” it is a foundation for health, safety, and wellbeing. Our homemakers are attentive, caring individuals who notice changes in the home environment, build genuine relationships with clients, and support independence by doing what needs doing.

  • Light housekeeping โ€” vacuuming, sweeping, dusting
  • Bathroom and kitchen cleaning and sanitation
  • Laundry โ€” washing, drying, folding, putting away
  • Linen changes and bed-making
  • Grocery shopping with receipt provided
  • Meal planning based on cultural needs and dietary requirements
  • Meal preparation โ€” breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks
  • Kitchen organization and pantry management
  • Home organization and declutter support

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We work with all dietary needs including halal, kosher, vegetarian, diabetic-friendly, low-sodium, soft-food diets, and others. We document this in the care plan so every visit reflects those requirements.
Absolutely fine. Our services are flexible. If you only need meal preparation support a few times per week, we can build exactly that into your care plan without adding services you don't need.

Companionship

Loneliness is one of the most significant and underaddressed health risks facing seniors in Canada. Research consistently links chronic social isolation to increased rates of depression, cognitive decline, and physical health deterioration. Our companionship service exists to address this directly.

For many of our clients, the caregiver who visits three times a week is the person they look forward to most. That relationship is not incidental to care โ€” it is care.

What's Included

  • Regular in-home social visits โ€” conversation, storytelling
  • Shared activities โ€” reading, puzzles, card and board games
  • Music, film, and cultural engagement
  • Reminiscence and life review conversations
  • Letter writing, video calls, staying connected with family
  • Walks, outdoor time, and light activity
  • Accompaniment to community events and faith gatherings
  • Consistent, trusted presence for clients living alone

Frequently Asked Questions

This is one of the most common things we hear โ€” and completely understandable. We recommend starting small: a short introductory visit, framed as a conversation rather than a care visit. Most clients who are initially reluctant come to genuinely value the relationship over time. We never push โ€” we build trust slowly, on the client's terms.
We take matching seriously. During intake we ask about personality, interests, languages spoken, and cultural background. We introduce a companion before regular visits begin and check in after the first few visits to make sure it feels right. If it's not the right fit, we find someone who is.

System Navigation

Navigation & System Support

Ontario's health and community care system is complex, fragmented, and often difficult to navigate โ€” especially for families who are managing a loved one's care from a distance, or for seniors who have never had to access these services before.

At Visible Hands, system navigation is not an add-on. It is a reflection of who we are and where we come from. Our team has worked inside Ontario's health care system as social workers, nurses, and public health professionals. We understand how the system works โ€” and where it breaks down. We use that knowledge to help you navigate it.

You shouldn't have to fight the system to get the care you deserve. We know the doors โ€” and how to open them.

Frequently Asked Questions

No โ€” system navigation is included as part of your care with Visible Hands, not an add-on service with a separate fee. We believe that helping clients and families navigate the broader health care systems is inseparable from the care itself. Wraparound support is not a premium feature here โ€” it is simply how we work.
For anyone who feels overwhelmed by the complexity of the health and social care system โ€” families managing care for a parent from a distance, individuals recently discharged from hospital who are unsure of their next steps, or clients managing multiple chronic conditions who need someone to help make sense of all the moving parts.
Our founding team includes a Registered Social Worker with extensive experience in seniors' health and system navigation, a public health researcher with expertise in health equity and policy and a Registered Practical Nurse with 20+ years of community care experience. We bring professional credentials and lived experience to this work โ€” and we have all navigated this system ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

This service is available for all ages โ€” children, youth, and adults living with special needs. We recognize that the need for support does not end at 18, and we are committed to providing dignified, person-centred care across the lifespan.
Respite care provides family caregivers with a planned, reliable break from their caregiving responsibilities. Research consistently shows that caregiver burnout is one of the greatest risks to the wellbeing of both the caregiver and the person they care for. Respite is not a luxury โ€” it is an essential part of sustainable family care.
We take matching seriously. We ask about your family member's personality, interests, communication style, sensory needs, and diagnosis before making a match. We introduce the support worker before regular visits begin and check in frequently โ€” especially in the early weeks โ€” to make sure the relationship feels safe and right.
Yes โ€” community outings, park and play, appointments, recreational programs, and social activities are all part of what we offer. Community inclusion is central to our approach. We support individuals to engage with the world around them in ways that are safe, meaningful, and enjoyable.
